ICRC Pledges Further Cooperation with Cambodia Following Meeting with Prime Minister
Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet met with the ICRC's regional delegation chief, discussing humanitarian law support and cooperation during conflicts. The ICRC pledged to further strengthen its partnership with Cambodia.
On the afternoon of July 2, 2024, Prime Minister of Cambodia, Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet, received Mr. Jürg Montani, Head of Regional Delegation of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), and his delegation for a courtesy call and working discussion at the Peace Palace. During the meeting, Mr. Montani briefed the Prime Minister on the close cooperation between the ICRC and the Cambodian Red Cross, as well as with the Cambodian government, in supporting emergency response and promoting International Humanitarian Law (IHL). He also expressed his pleasure that the ICRC had made significant contributions in facilitating various tasks during the Cambodia-Thailand border conflict. Mr. Montani also informed the Prime Minister that during his working visit to Cambodia, he had inspected the implementation of the physical rehabilitation assistance program in Battambang province and the prison health program. Furthermore, Mr. Montani reiterated the ICRC's commitment to continue supporting and strengthening cooperation with Cambodia. In response, Samdech Thipadei congratulated Mr. Jürg Montani on his appointment as Head of the ICRC's Regional Delegation. He highly valued the role of the ICRC in contributing to Cambodia's socio-economic development and expressed gratitude for the ICRC's support to Cambodian refugees during the Cambodia-Thailand border conflict, as well as for actively facilitating the release of 18 Cambodian soldiers illegally detained by the Thai side. Simultaneously, the Prime Minister expressed satisfaction with the fruitful cooperation between Cambodia and the ICRC. In this regard, he thanked the ICRC for providing support for the implementation of numerous projects in Cambodia and highlighted the Cambodian government's commitment to protecting every citizen through the formulation of the National Social Protection Policy Framework 2024-2035, including the implementation of cash transfer programs for pregnant inmates and mothers with children under two years old in prisons. The Prime Minister encouraged the ICRC to further strengthen its relations with relevant Cambodian ministries and institutions to promote more robust and prosperous cooperation between Cambodia and the ICRC. Additionally, the Prime Minister emphasized the Cambodian government's commitment to supporting respect for international law, including International Humanitarian Law (IHL).
