Nghệ An Province Develops Bamboo Forests for Rural Revitalization and Disaster Prevention

In Tam Thai commune, Nghe An province, central Vietnam, the development of environmentally friendly bamboo forests is underway as an initiative to improve the livelihoods of local residents and enhance disaster prevention. Our reporting team, after visiting the area and participating in the distribution of saplings and tree planting, has gained strong confidence that within 3 to 5 years, lush bamboo forests will spread, protecting the region from floods and supporting the villagers' livelihoods. This project goes beyond simple afforestation, aiming to "create wealth through precious plants" that contribute to the revitalization of the local economy. In recent years, Vietnam has been focusing on adapting to climate change by promoting crop diversification in agriculture and accelerating greening initiatives. For instance, Can Tho province is actively converting to crops suitable for climate change, while Dong Thap province is rigorously managing its key crops. Furthermore, a plan to plant 1.5 million trees is scheduled for the period 2026-2030, in response to World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought. Specific initiatives, such as tree planting by tourists and the planting of Trường Sa (Spratly Islands) baobab trees, are also being carried out in various locations. The bamboo forest development in Tam Thai commune is positioned as part of these national greening and environmental conservation policies. Bamboo, with its rapid growth and high effectiveness in preventing soil erosion, serves as a form of disaster prevention infrastructure in Vietnam, a country prone to floods and landslides. Simultaneously, bamboo has high utility value as building material, craft material, and even biomass fuel, leading to expectations of new industry creation and increased employment opportunities. This is anticipated to contribute to strengthening the economic base of rural areas and improving residents' incomes. As the official newspaper of the Communist Party of Vietnam, Nhan Dan reports on such specific local initiatives to demonstrate the steady implementation of the Party's policies on the ground and to garner public support. Under the one-party system, balancing environmental conservation with economic growth is a crucial challenge in building a sustainable society, and the development of bamboo forests in Tam Thai commune can be seen as an example of this effort.
