Vietnam Builds Trust with Fishermen to Lift EU 'Yellow Card'

Vietnam is intensifying efforts to achieve sustainable marine resource management and comply with international standards, with the aim of having the European Commission's 'yellow card' against illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing lifted. Currently, over 100 fisheries unions, solidarity groups, and teams protecting national sovereignty and security at sea in Da Nang have signed commitments not to engage in IUU fishing. This marks a significant step in addressing the concerns raised by the EU. In coastal communities, alternative livelihoods such as tourism and aquaculture are being promoted to reduce dependence on fishing and ease pressure on marine resources. Simultaneously, public awareness campaigns and law enforcement are being strengthened to deter illegal activities. According to the Da Nang Department of Agriculture and Environment, 100% of fishing vessels measuring 15 meters or longer have installed VMS (Vessel Monitoring System) devices and completed mandatory vessel identification. This has significantly strengthened fisheries management and IUU fishing prevention.
