Reports are being seen on social media claiming that military leader Min Aung Hlaing crashed his plane on his return from a trip to China and that the military headquarters in Naypyidaw has covered up this incident. An account impersonating "Khitt Thit Media" disseminated a video file on June 17th, stating, "Min Aung Hlaing is no longer able to return home. Min Aung Hlaing's plane crashed on his return from China, and China is claiming it was US air interference" (as written in the original). This video has been viewed nearly 500,000 times. Dissemination using AI-generated images has also been observed from other accounts. Mizzima's fact-check of this news found it to be false. Military leader Min Aung Hlaing is currently on a 5-day trip to China from June 15th to June 19th. The fake news claims a plane crash occurred on the return journey and was disseminated on June 17th. This means the fake news was created and disseminated in advance, before his scheduled return. Furthermore, the image used in the video shows a plane crash, with the aircraft registration number XY-ALK on the fuselage, and flames on the wings and belly. Upon investigating this aircraft, it was found that the image disseminated in the fake news does not match the actual aircraft in terms of the shape of the tail wing, the number of doors, and the presence of text and flags on the fuselage. Link – https://shorturl.at/nbZHk Inconsistencies such as the first image of the plane crash being on a runway while the second image is on a grassy area were also found. No credible news reports from media outlets have been found regarding this matter, nor have any statements been released by the relevant authorities. The account that disseminated the fake news is also found to be an account that regularly disseminates fake news related to the military leader and the military, mixed with AI-generated content. Therefore, the news that military leader Min Aung Hlaing's plane crashed on his return from his China trip is a deliberately fabricated piece of fake news.
