Phnom Penh to Open New Landfill in 2027 Amid Financial Challenges

Phnom Penh will officially open a new landfill on January 1, 2027. Located in Toul Prek village, Ang Snoul district, Kandal province, the new facility will replace the current landfill in Dangkor district, Phnom Penh. This announcement was made by Mr. Huot Hai, Deputy Governor of Phnom Penh, on the morning of October 10, 2026, during the 28th ordinary meeting of the Phnom Penh City Council. The new landfill spans 143 hectares and has been developed to international standards in its first phase. Mr. Huot Hai stated that while the monthly revenue from waste collection fees is approximately $2 million, the operational costs exceed this amount, resulting in a financial deficit. Currently, three companies are responsible for collecting and transporting approximately 4,100 tons of waste daily, a significant increase from the previous single company's collection of 2,700 tons per day. During the meeting, the Deputy Governor also highlighted the successful crackdown on online scams by Phnom Penh authorities, attributing the effectiveness to proactive efforts by each district and strong cooperation from residents. Furthermore, he noted that Phnom Penh received an award from the World Health Organization (WHO) for its efforts in promoting traffic safety, a success achieved through the collective endeavors of the city council, municipal administration, districts, and relevant departments.
