Vietnam, China Enhance Cooperation on Cross-Border Crime Prevention

Vietnam and China have agreed to strengthen their cooperation in combating cross-border crimes. Key cooperation priorities for the coming period include strengthening border management, strictly implementing the three legal documents on the Vietnam–China land border, stepping up efforts to combat and suppress cross-border crimes, enhancing information sharing and coordination in handling cases emerging in border areas, and facilitating customs clearance. This agreement reflects the close relationship between the two countries and their shared interest in regional stability and security. Vietnam, under its one-party system, prioritizes social stability, and ensuring border security is a crucial element of national governance. In recent years, Vietnam's economy has experienced rapid growth, but cross-border crimes can impact the smooth flow of economic activities and social stability. Specifically, the border with China is economically and strategically important for Vietnam, with active trade and movement of people. However, this active exchange also increases the risk of cross-border crimes such as drug trafficking, human trafficking, and smuggling. Joint efforts by both countries to address these crimes are expected to contribute not only to maintaining security within Vietnam but also to overall regional stability. Past cooperation examples, such as joint patrols between the two countries, have been reported, and this agreement signifies a continuation and deepening of such efforts. Economically, trade with China is vital for Vietnam. Trade via the Youyi Guan border gate between China and Vietnam reportedly jumped 28.3% in the first half of this year. Enhanced efforts to combat cross-border crimes can ensure the safety of these legitimate trade activities and further boost economic growth.
