Can Gio-Vung Tau Sea Crossing Road Studied to Pass Through Vung Tau Airport

Ho Chi Minh City has requested opinions from the Ministry of National Defense and the Ministry of Construction regarding the possibility of a route for the Can Gio-Vung Tau sea crossing road that would pass through Vung Tau Airport. The sea crossing road is planned to merge with the planned Sao Mai-Ben Dinh road when it reaches the Vung Tau side from Can Gio district, terminating at the intersection with the existing National Highway 51A (April 30th Street). To optimize investment efficiency and reduce traffic congestion, a route extending from the April 30th Street intersection to the planned coastal road is being studied. This extension is expected to strengthen connectivity with September 2nd Street and February 3rd Street, which are important external routes within Vung Tau city, thereby contributing to dispersing traffic volume and reducing pressure on April 30th Street. Under this planned route, the Sao Mai-Ben Dinh road would pass through the current Vung Tau Airport. Based on already approved master plans, Ho Chi Minh City assesses that the route for the Sao Mai-Ben Dinh road passing through Vung Tau Airport is appropriate. Therefore, the city has requested opinions from both ministries on investing in this road construction and has asked for consideration of Vung Tau Airport's future utilization plans to enable integrated development. Vung Tau Airport is located on April 30th Street in Vung Tau City (formerly), now belonging to Tam Thang ward, Vung Tau City. This is a dedicated airport managed and operated by the Vietnam Helicopter Corporation, featuring runways for small aircraft and helicopters. It is primarily used for defense training and personnel transport in the oil and gas industry. In the past, Vung Tau Airport was planned to be relocated to the Go Gang area within the spatial development and urban reconstruction plans for Ba Ria-Vung Tau province (formerly). However, Go Gang Airport has now been excluded from the plan to facilitate urban development. The Can Gio-Vung Tau sea crossing road project is one of Ho Chi Minh City's key projects, planned to be approximately 14.06 km long with 6 lanes. In early July, component 1 of the project, the access road on the Can Gio side, commenced construction. The route starts from Can Thanh-Long Hoa Avenue in the Vinhomes Green Paradise urban area in Can Gio and terminates at the intersection with April 30th Street on the Vung Tau side. It is designed for a speed of 80 km/h, with a total investment cost of over 93 trillion VND (more than 450 million USD). The structure includes over 8 km of sea bridges, approximately 3.9 km of underwater tunnels, and access roads at both ends.
