Hon Chong Coral Reefs in Nha Trang Bay Under Strict Protection
Diverse coral ecosystems, including rare species, have been identified in the Hon Chong area off Vietnam's Nha Trang Bay. Following incidents of damage by careless tourists, authorities are implementing strict protection measures and restoration plans using novel propagation techniques.
The Nha Trang Bay Management Board in Khanh Hoa Province has announced strict protection measures for the coral reefs off Hon Chong. Recent surveys, conducted in collaboration with the Vietnam – Russia Tropical Centre, have confirmed this marine area harbors the most diverse coral ecosystem within the Nha Trang Bay Marine Protected Area, including numerous rare species. The survey identified 62 coral species across 12 families in the Hon Chong and Dang Tat marine areas. The Hon Chong area, in particular, stands out as the most diverse coral habitat in Nha Trang Bay, boasting 8 types of Acropora species. The overall hard coral coverage averages 32.4%, with the northwestern part of Hon Chong showing a high coverage of 65.7%. Recent incidents involving careless tourists breaking off corals, which led to fines of 25 million VND for two individuals, sparked significant public discussion and underscored the need for enhanced protection. The provincial People’s Committee had already issued directives in 2023 to strengthen conservation efforts. While the overall coral health in the surveyed areas is classified as "medium," the high coverage rates are notable. Furthermore, researchers from the Vietnam – Russia Tropical Centre achieved a domestic first by successfully collecting natural coral gametes (eggs and sperm) in the Hon Chong area. This breakthrough in studying coral sexual reproduction offers a promising new conservation method, moving beyond traditional coral transplantation. This novel technique involves combining gametes from different colonies to generate a large number of juvenile corals over a wide area. This approach enhances genetic diversity, fostering resilient coral generations better equipped to withstand the pressures of climate change and human activities. The research team aims to scale up these sustainable propagation methods for broader application in coral reef restoration projects across Nha Trang Bay and nationwide.
