Police Foil Smuggling of Stolen Motorcycles from Jakarta to Sumatra
West Jakarta police foiled a smuggling operation involving 12 stolen motorcycles disguised as furniture shipments destined for Sumatra. Acting on public tips, officers tracked and intercepted a truck, preventing the illicit transfer. Investigations are ongoing to identify all stolen vehicles and apprehend involved parties.
The Tiger Unit of the Criminal Investigation Unit of the Tambora Police Precinct, West Jakarta, has thwarted the smuggling of 12 motorcycles suspected to be the proceeds of crime to Sumatra Island. The smuggling operation used a modus operandi of furniture expedition. The disclosure of the case began with public information reporting that a truck suspected of carrying criminal vehicles was about to pass through the Jalan Tubagus Angke area, West Jakarta, on Tuesday (7/7). Following up on the report, the Tiger Unit of the Tambora Police Precinct immediately conducted an investigation. However, upon arriving at the location, the truck in question had already passed and entered the toll road. "Officers then tracked the vehicle and obtained information that it was on the Cikupa Toll Road. Without wasting time, the team immediately pursued and managed to stop the truck in the Cikupa Toll Exit area," said AKP Wahyu Hidayat, Head of the Tambora Police Precinct, West Jakarta Metro Police, in his statement on Wednesday (15/7). After successfully stopping it, the police immediately inspected the contents of the truck. The results showed that 12 motorcycles were found, suspected to be stolen. "All the vehicles were stacked and disguised with various household items and children's toys. Based on the driver's statement, these motorcycles were planned to be sent to Sumatra," Wahyu said. Wahyu mentioned that this disguise was done by covering the transported motorcycles. As a result, from the outside, the truck appeared to be carrying only household furnishings, or furniture. "This is an attempt by the perpetrators to deceive officers and the public during the journey so that the actual cargo is not visible," he said. After all vehicles were secured, investigators immediately examined the frame and engine numbers. Then, a match was made with data from stolen vehicle reports. Preliminary examination results show that two motorcycles have been confirmed as stolen, based on police reports from the Kebon Jeruk and Cengkareng Police Precincts, respectively. Meanwhile, the other 10 motorcycles are still undergoing identification processes to ascertain their origins. "We are still investigating the ten vehicles. If a match is found with loss reports or legitimate owners, we will immediately contact the victims so that their vehicles can be returned according to procedure," Wahyu stated. In addition to the evidence, the police also apprehended the truck driver with the initials RA, who is currently still a witness. The examination revealed a man with the initials TA who is suspected of being involved in the delivery of these vehicles and has now been designated as a Person of Interest (DPO). "Investigators are also continuously developing this case to uncover the possibility of a cross-regional vehicle theft network involved as executors, fences, and transporters of vehicles out of Java Island," said Wahyu. Wahyu also urged the public who feel they have lost a motorcycle to immediately come to the Tambora Police Precinct with ownership documents such as STNK or BPKB for the matching process. "We are opening opportunities for the public who feel they have lost their vehicles to come to the Tambora Police Precinct. If the vehicle identity matches, it will certainly be returned to the legitimate owner in accordance with applicable regulations," said Wahyu.
