Remains Recovery Mission at Vi Xuyen Front: Soldiers' Devoted Journey to Bring Back the Fallen

In the rugged mountainous terrain of the northern border of Vietnam, at the Vi Xuyen front, soldiers are engaged daily in the sacred mission of collecting and repatriating the remains of fallen soldiers. Before them stretch the highlands where fierce battles once raged for the defense of the homeland's border. This region is known as a fierce battlefield in the post-Vietnam War border conflicts. Amidst the challenging terrain and harsh natural environment, soldiers have been engaged for many years in the search and collection of scattered remains of soldiers. This activity not only recovers the remains but also holds significant meaning in restoring the dignity of fallen soldiers and providing solace to their families. Recent reports indicate that 26 sets of remains have been collected through this effort, and numerous personal effects have been discovered. Furthermore, restored portraits of the fallen have been presented to their families, and memorial ceremonies honoring the fallen are held across the country, demonstrating that this activity is shared by the entire society. In particular, memorial events on Con Dao Island and in temples nationwide symbolize the nation's patriotism and its wish for peace. This remains recovery mission can also be interpreted as part of patriotism education under Vietnam's one-party system. Respect for soldiers who sacrificed their lives for the nation is encouraged as a symbol of national unity.
