Anti-Israel Sentiment in Thailand Shifts from Tourist Issues to 'Zionist Neo-Occupation' Fears

Anti-Israel sentiment in Thailand is evolving from concerns over the behavior of some Israeli tourists to broader fears of 'Zionist neo-occupation.' The Israeli ambassador has expressed concern over demonstrations at the embassy escalating to 'Free Palestine' chants. In an interview with an Israeli media outlet, Israeli Ambassador to Thailand Alona Fisher-Kamm acknowledged a shift in anti-Israel sentiment in Thailand. Previously, anger was directed at the rudeness and law-breaking of some Israeli tourists and expats. However, recent demonstrations outside the embassy have included chants of “Free Palestine” and insults against Jews, indicating the issue has extended beyond tourism. Several key players are involved in this fluid development. Te Acheewa, known for his ultra-royalist stance and previous raids on illegal migrant workers, leads the “Thai Intolerance” group. He staged the first anti-“Grey Jews” demonstration outside the Israeli Embassy in Bangkok and later led a protest outside a Chabad House in Patong, Phuket, leading to the cancellation of Jewish New Year celebrations there. Te Acheewa, who has a million followers on Facebook, claims he is being monitored by Israel’s Mossad. He has publicly challenged Mossad to face him directly, vowing to fight for Thai people. Another prominent figure is Sondhi Limthongkul, a former yellowshirt leader and royalist nationalist. He suggested that Israel should revoke work permits for the estimated 40,000 to 50,000 Thai workers in Israel in retaliation for growing anti-Israel sentiment. Limthongkul subscribes to conspiracy theories that Thailand is a target for Zionist neo-colonization, aiming to incorporate the kingdom into a Greater Israel, a view influenced by a Thai Muslim figure close to Iran. Thai Muslims, particularly in the predominantly Malay-Muslim deep south, oppose Israel’s actions in Gaza, aligning with Malaysia’s non-recognition of Israel. Conversely, some Thai Christian evangelists present themselves as friends of Israel, citing their interpretation of biblical texts. The situation highlights the complex interplay of international affairs, economic interests, and diverse socio-political ideologies within Thailand, raising concerns about potential escalations of emotional conflict.
