Cambodia, ICRC Pledge Closer Cooperation on Humanitarian Law, Thank Red Cross for Role in Soldier Release

PHNOM PENH, July 3, 2026 (KPT) — Cambodia’s Ministry of National Defence has expressed gratitude to the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) for helping secure the release of 18 Cambodian soldiers detained by Thailand, during talks with visiting officials in Phnom Penh. Lieutenant General Rath Dararoth, Secretary of State at the ministry, met Jürg Montani, Head of the ICRC Regional Delegation for Asia, on behalf of Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister General Tea Seiha. Rath praised the ICRC’s continued support, describing its role in facilitating the soldiers’ release as a significant humanitarian contribution that underscored the organisation’s impartiality and humanitarian mandate. Montani said the ICRC was pleased to have assisted in the process and reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening cooperation with Cambodia. He noted that the organisation would continue to work closely with the authorities to promote respect for international humanitarian law and respond to humanitarian needs. The Cambodian side also briefed the delegation on the situation along the Cambodia‑Thailand border, reiterating that disputes should be resolved peacefully in line with international law and bilateral agreements. Rath stressed that Cambodia remained committed to dialogue and cooperation to prevent further tensions. Both sides welcomed ongoing collaboration between the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces and the ICRC, pledging to deepen efforts to uphold humanitarian principles, support stability, and contribute to peace and security in the region.
