Bang Saen Beach Turns Brown, Deterring Tourists; Suspected Brown Algae Bloom

The sea at Bang Saen beach in Chonburi province, a popular tourist destination in eastern Thailand, has been observed to have turned brown. This unusual phenomenon has caused many tourists to refrain from swimming. According to a report by local media MGR Online (Regional), the most likely cause of the brown seawater is a massive bloom of brown plankton, commonly known as a "brown tide." Abnormal plankton blooms are thought to occur due to a combination of environmental factors, such as rising sea temperatures and increased nutrient levels. Bang Saen beach is known for being a lively spot, attracting numerous Thai tourists and local residents, especially on weekends, due to its relatively easy access from Bangkok. However, the brown discoloration of the sea is significantly diminishing its appeal, raising concerns about a decline in tourist numbers.
