Vietnam's Party Chief Arrives in New York for UNGA, to Share Doi Moi Lessons

General Secretary and President To Lam, along with a high-ranking Vietnamese delegation, has arrived at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York. His arrival on September 20 (local time) marks his participation in the high-level debate of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA). Lam's attendance is particularly significant as Vietnam and the UN are experiencing strong and substantive development in their relations. With the 50th anniversary of Vietnam-UN relations on the horizon, his address will reaffirm the country's strong support for and commitment to the central role of the UN in multilateral cooperation and the promotion of respect for international law. During the forum, the Vietnamese leader is expected to share lessons learned from Vietnam's 40 years of Doi Moi (Renewal) policy with leaders from other nations. Furthermore, he will put forward practical initiatives to address common global challenges such as climate change, sustainable development, and the governance of future core technologies. This is anticipated to further affirm Vietnam's reputation, position, and new potential on the international stage. In addition to the High-Level General Debate, Lam will engage in discussions at several significant events focusing on critical issues including the right to development, climate change and a just transition, sea-level rise, pandemic prevention, preparedness and response, and nuclear disarmament. These are highly practical matters directly impacting peace, security, development, and people's lives, offering an opportunity for UN member states to exchange views, propose solutions, and shape cooperation priorities for the years ahead. The working trip and bilateral activities in the US are expected to contribute to implementing common perceptions reached by senior leaders of both countries, continuing to promote their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in a stable, substantive, effective, and sustainable manner. The visit also serves as an opportunity to step up high-level contacts, discuss strategic and long-term issues of importance to bilateral relations, and deepen mutual understanding while garnering support for Vietnam and Vietnam-US relations.
