Thai Navy Chief Downplays Frigate Procurement Controversy

Admiral Paitoon Phuangchan, Commander of the Royal Thai Navy, stated that there are 'no issues' regarding the controversy surrounding the 17 billion baht frigate procurement project. Speaking at a press conference before his retirement on September 30, 2024, he apologized for past shortcomings and expressed his hope for cooperation from all parties to build a navy that the public trusts and is proud of. He also affirmed that the Navy has always spoken the truth. The procurement plan has drawn criticism and raised questions on social media since its announcement on September 18. Admiral Paitoon clarified that the Navy has consistently provided factual explanations and is ready to address any further questions from the public or media. He believes that public sentiment will naturally subside once the facts are clear, adding that he himself had no prior concerns about the matter. The press conference was attended by Admiral Naret Wongtrakul, the incoming Navy Commander, and other high-ranking naval officers. Admiral Paitoon also expressed gratitude to the media for their past support and cooperation in disseminating information about the Navy's missions and operations, acknowledging their significant role in enhancing the Navy's image and public trust.
