China National Day Banquet Highlights Laos-China Friendship Year and Regional Ties

Senior officials of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party (LPRP), including members of its Politburo, attended a banquet celebrating the 77th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China and the "Year of China-Laos Friendship." The event underscored the close ties between Laos and China. Chinese Ambassador to Laos Fang Hong highlighted China’s development over the past 77 years and its ongoing cooperation with other nations. She noted that 2026 marks the 65th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Laos, emphasizing the significance of the "Year of China-Laos Friendship." Ambassador Fang cited practical cooperation examples such as the China-Laos Railway, agricultural and poverty-reduction initiatives, healthcare cooperation, and the China-Laos 500-kilovolt power interconnection project. She stated that these projects have enhanced connectivity, created employment opportunities, introduced improved cultivation techniques to rural communities, provided cataract treatment through the "Brightness Action" medical program, and expanded electricity exchange capacity. Cooperation through multilateral frameworks, including the United Nations, ASEAN-China, and Lancang-Mekong Cooperation, was also mentioned. Laos joined the World Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Organization (WAICO) as a founding member in July 2026. The banquet also referenced agreements made during General Secretary and President Thongloun Sisoulith's state visit to China in June 2026, focusing on advancing the building of an all-weather China-Laos community with a shared future and deepening cooperation in connectivity, trade, energy, digital development, and people’s livelihoods. Concurrently, Vietnamese Permanent Deputy Prime Minister Pham Gia Tuc visited Laos on the same day, holding talks with General Secretary and President Thongloun Sisoulith and Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone. The discussions reviewed bilateral cooperation and outlined priorities for the remaining months of the year. Deputy Prime Minister Tuc also visited Laos’s National Population Database and Citizen Identification Card Project and the Ministry of Public Security’s Command Center construction project. These engagements suggest Laos is actively managing its relationships with both China and Vietnam, its two major neighbors. For a one-party state like Laos, maintaining stable ties with these powerful countries is crucial for economic development and domestic stability. While Chinese infrastructure investment and economic aid are vital for Laos to overcome its economic challenges, strengthening ties with Vietnam likely aims to solidify Laos's geopolitical position in the region.
