Christianity in China: Testing Religious Freedom and the Enduring Influence of Watchman Nee

Christianity in China is characterized by two primary trends: the continued growth and vibrancy of the faith, and increasing scrutiny and pressure on Christian organizations by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). Chinese Christians are responding theologically and practically to their evolving political and social environments. This discussion primarily focuses on Protestants, as Catholicism and Protestantism are legally and linguistically treated as distinct religions in China. Key areas of interest for Chinese Christians include the nature of church authority and administration, doctrines of salvation, and perspectives on human nature. Notably, the influence of prominent Christian leader Watchman Nee extends far beyond China. His theology offers a universal message for Chinese Christians pursuing their mission, largely independent of political repression. Nee's teachings emphasize unity within pure, local churches, rooted in self-denial and deep love for Christ, contrasting with modern self-indulgence. Nee's writings, including "The Normal Christian Life," have sold millions globally and been translated into dozens of languages. His influence is particularly strong in non-Western Christian circles in Africa and Latin America, remaining potent over 50 years after his death. Like Confucius, Lao Zi, and Mao Zedong, Nee's thought has transcended China to become part of a global intellectual discourse. His message highlights that God seeks true worshippers whose lives stem from radical self-denial born of deep love for Christ and the church, rather than mere adherence to rituals or doctrines.
