To Lam Welcomed in Canada, Eyes Deeper Bilateral Ties

Party General Secretary and President To Lam attended an official welcome ceremony at Rideau Hall in Ottawa, Canada, on September 24 (local time), 2026. Following a meeting with the Governor General, both leaders held a joint press conference. The Governor General described To Lam's visit as a reflection of the close and enduring ties between the two countries, emphasizing that they are connected by an enduring friendship nurtured over generations, transcending geographical distances. Furthermore, the two countries are united by a shared commitment to a stable, open, and prosperous Indo-Pacific region, and this friendship is further reflected in the vitality and contributions of the Vietnamese community in Canada, which has enriched Canadian society. The Governor General stated that the visit provides an opportunity for both countries to acknowledge past achievements and look toward the future. To Lam reiterated that Vietnam treasures its relations with Canada. He noted that more than half a century after the establishment of diplomatic relations and nearly a decade since the Comprehensive Partnership framework was established in November 2017, Vietnam-Canada relations have made important strides, with political trust increasingly strengthened and exchanges in areas such as economy, trade, investment, defense, security, science and technology, education, and people-to-people expanding in both scope and depth. To Lam expressed his expectation that the visit would open a new chapter in Vietnam-Canada relations and reflect the determination of both countries to build a long-term, stable, and substantive relationship that could serve as a model of cooperation between two countries on opposite shores of the Pacific.
