LGU Execs Reminded to Be Sensitive During Duties Amid Designer Outfit Controversy

MANILA, Philippines — The Office of the President has reminded local government executives to be sensitive when performing their duties, following public outcry over some officials seen wearing designer outfits during visits to flood-affected areas. The Palace emphasized that public service is demonstrated through actions and deeds, not through attire. The reminder came after Pampanga Governor Lilia Pineda and her son, Vice Governor Dennis Pineda, were spotted in high-end designer clothing while visiting flooded areas in Lubao. The incident sparked criticism from the public, questioning the appropriateness of their attire in a disaster-stricken setting. Presidential Communications Officer Claire Castro stated that while she believes officials know how to act appropriately when interacting with constituents, she acknowledged the differing perceptions of wealth. "We do not know whether the wearing of branded (clothes) is something that is affordable to them. It depends. For ordinary people, it is expensive, but it may just be cheap for them," Castro said at a press briefing. She added, "Service delivery is not seen through outfit, but through deeds. It can be seen if leaders are visible and ready to help." Governor Pineda had previously told media that her family possessed some wealth and that they simply wore whatever clothing was readily available. She has since apologized to those offended and welcomed the criticism. Castro also indicated that Malacañang would not interfere with how local governments convey their messages, following Pineda's controversial remarks reportedly advising constituents to pray rather than solely rely on the government. This incident has ignited a discussion among Filipinos regarding the decorum expected of public servants and the importance of empathy towards disaster victims.
