Hun Sen Urges Enhanced Border Cooperation with Vietnam to Boost Trade
Former Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen, now President of the Senate, has instructed provincial authorities in Mondulkiri to strengthen border cooperation with Vietnam to boost economic and trade ties, emphasizing improved public services and provincial development.
Mondulkiri, July 7, 2026 -- Samdech Techo Hun Sen, President of the Senate of the Kingdom of Cambodia, has urged the authorities of Mondulkiri Province to strengthen border cooperation with Vietnam to boost economic and trade activities between the two countries. The statement was made during a meeting with provincial council members and leaders of various departments of Mondulkiri Province, attended by approximately 500 participants, held at the provincial hall on the morning of July 7, 2026. During the meeting, Samdech Techo Hun Sen expressed his pleasure in returning to meet with the leaders and civil servants of Mondulkiri Province. He commended and highly valued the efforts of the provincial leadership, civil servants, and local working groups. He reminded all civil servants, especially commune/sangkat council members, to continue diligently fulfilling their duties to serve the nation and the people effectively, particularly by providing necessary and essential services to the citizens quickly, promptly, and efficiently. Samdech Techo also encouraged and supported the strengthening of tax and customs collection efficiency, along with strict measures to prevent tax evasion or undeclared business activities to increase national revenue. He reminded all officials to maintain national stability and pay attention to ensuring public security and order by continuing to implement the "Safe Village-Commune" policy, including cracking down on various crimes such as robbery, theft, drug trafficking, and technological crimes. Samdech Techo also urged authorities at all levels to continue paying attention to veterans and retirees, as they have significantly contributed to the nation's development. Therefore, they should be cared for through visits and organized programs to prevent them from feeling isolated. He also advised authorities to address land disputes for citizens quickly and effectively, especially through out-of-court settlements, without bias towards any party. Samdech Techo also called on authorities at all levels to strengthen the protection, conservation, and prevention of all natural resource crimes, especially in Mondulkiri Province, concerning mining operations, to avoid environmental impact and to participate in preserving natural resources for sustainability. According to a report by H.E. Kong Kimny, Governor of Mondulkiri Province, the province is located in the northeast, 382 kilometers from Phnom Penh. Mondulkiri has three important bilateral border gates: the Lao Pa Khem gate in Keo Seima district, the Dak Dam gate in Ou Reang district, and the Nam Lear gate in Pech Chreada district, along with the Chmiet gate in Koh Nhek district which is not yet operational. Under the development policies of the Royal Government, both during Samdech Techo's leadership and the current leadership of Samdech Decho, Mondulkiri Province has seen remarkable development. Mondulkiri is a province with a vast area and fertile land suitable for agricultural and agro-industrial crops, especially rubber, cashew nuts, and many other important crops. Currently, the area for agricultural and agro-industrial production is approximately 123,685 hectares, yielding about 524,357 tons. The rubber cultivation area is about 43,912 hectares, of which about 22,786 hectares are tapped for latex, producing approximately 29,304 tons of latex. Cashew nut cultivation covers about 11,165 hectares, with a total yield of 10,328 tons. In terms of tourism, Mondulkiri Province has a total of 105 tourist attractions, including waterfalls, landscapes, and grasslands. Tourism services include hotels, resorts, bungalows, motels, guesthouses, restaurants, eateries, and other tourism services. Regarding the mining sector, Mondulkiri has 18 investing companies with 21 licenses. Currently, Renaissance Minerals Cambodia has been operating gold refining since 2021, refining over 18 tons of gold to date. It is worth recalling that this is Samdech Techo's 17th mission and the 20th province/city visited to meet with leaders and civil servants of ministries and institutions in various provinces and cities, starting from Kampong Cham, Tbong Khmum, Kampong Speu, Takeo, Kampot, Kep, Svay Rieng, Prey Veng, Phnom Penh, Kampong Chhnang, Pursat, Kampong Thom, Kandal, Siem Reap, Oddar Meanchey, Banteay Meanchey, Battambang, Pailin, Kratié, and Mondulkiri Province.
