PM Orders Swift Response to Gia Lai Bus Rollover

A tragic passenger bus rollover accident in Vietnam's central Gia Lai province has resulted in four fatalities. In response, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has instructed the Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee to direct relevant agencies and units to mobilize all available personnel, provide the best possible medical care and medicines for the injured, minimize loss of life and property, and offer support to the injured and the families of the deceased. This incident underscores the recurring issue of traffic accidents in Vietnam and the critical need for effective prevention measures. While Vietnam has been developing its transportation infrastructure, accidents caused by driver fatigue and negligence remain a persistent problem. Long-distance bus and truck accidents, in particular, tend to cause multiple casualties, leading to significant societal impact. Similar tragedies have occurred in the past, such as a coach accident in Dong Nai province that claimed seven lives. The government announced the establishment of a Road Accident Fund in September 2023 to support children and families affected by road accidents, aiming to enhance post-accident support systems. However, fundamental accident prevention measures, especially improving the working conditions for drivers and strictly enforcing traffic laws, remain crucial. Under Vietnam's one-party system, government directives are typically communicated and implemented swiftly, but ensuring effectiveness at the grassroots level remains a challenge.
