These digital banks are rapidly expanding their customer base and amassing billions in customer deposits by offering online-centric services, significantly reducing the overhead costs associated with traditional branch networks. A key factor in Indonesia's success is its supportive regulatory environment. Regulators have demonstrated an early willingness to encourage new entrants into the financial services sector, fostering innovation. This approach aligned with the broader tech sector boom occurring at the time. While the tech boom has since moderated, digital banks remain a promising and profitable segment. In contrast, countries like Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam are experiencing slower digital bank growth due to stricter regulations or delayed implementation. In Singapore, digital banks backed by major tech companies have seen loan portfolios stagnate, constrained by regulatory limitations. The Philippines, similar to Indonesia, shows growth in digital banks supported by major telecom and IT firms, but progress is heavily influenced by each country's specific regulatory landscape. Integration into wider existing commercial ecosystems is also crucial to the success of Indonesian digital banks.
