Home - Health - Thailand’s Teen Mental Health Crisis: How Crying Cloud Helps BANGKOK – A youth-led movement is changing how Thailand talks about depression, connecting thousands of young people to free therapy and vital support. There is a heavy silence that often surrounds mental health issues in Thailand today. Many teenagers struggle with deep sadness and anxiety completely behind closed doors. They feel entirely alone in their pain, hiding their feelings from friends and family. However, a youth-led movement is now changing this quiet reality for the better. In 2022, three siblings living in Bangkok decided to break this dangerous silence. They launched Crying Cloud, a digital platform to support teen mental health across the country. Their main goal was to offer the comfort they never had while growing up. Today, they are connecting thousands of young people to free therapy and vital support. Mental health challenges are growing rapidly among young people across Thailand as stress reaches alarming levels. The recent statistics paint a very concerning picture of this silent crisis affecting the younger generation. Teenagers are currently facing immense pressure from demanding schools, high family expectations, and modern society. A recent mental health assessment by UNICEF and the Department of Mental Health revealed shocking numbers. It found that 28 percent of Thai adolescents experience extremely high levels of stress. Furthermore, 32 percent are currently at serious risk of developing clinical depression. Most tragically, suicide is now the leading cause of death among Thai adolescents. Despite these severe numbers, a cultural stigma around mental health remains very strong in Thailand. In many traditional Thai families, talking about mental health problems is still considered highly taboo. There is an unspoken expectation to stay quiet about personal pain and emotional struggles. Therefore, many teenagers never ask for the professional help they so desperately need. Professional mental health services also remain very hard to access for average struggling teens. Therapy can be extremely expensive, and wait times at public hospitals are often too long. Furthermore, clinical settings can feel very scary and intimidating for a young, struggling teenager. Young people need a support system that feels friendly, accessible, and truly understanding. Smith Thamakaison and his two sisters, Sasin and Sirin, know this silent struggle incredibly well. They grew up in Bangkok facing their own personal battles with severe adolescent depression. However, they never fully acknowledged their deep emotional pain to each other as children. They certainly never spoke about their private mental health struggles outside their family walls. This shared silence eventually became the spark for a massive and impactful youth movement. As students at the International School Bangkok, they desperately wanted to make a real change. They quickly realized that thousands of other teens were suffering in total silence too. In 2022, at just 16 years old, Smith helped co-found the Crying Cloud organization. Crying Cloud is a youth-led social enterprise with a very clear and powerful mission. It aims to make mental health support much more accessible for youth across the country. The founders wanted to create a digital space that felt entirely safe and welcoming. They effectively built the exact support system they had desperately needed for themselves. The platform did not start with a grand business plan or corporate brand strategy. Instead, it began simply as an Instagram page to share relatable, everyday thoughts. Social media was clearly the most natural way to reach their specific young generation. They started posting relatable content to connect with other teens who felt totally alone. The content shared on Crying Cloud was intentionally simple, highly relatable, and slightly imperfect. The creators actively avoided the cold, clinical language often found in standard medical pamphlets. They also wanted to avoid dramatizing depression as a terrible, theatrical spectacle for viewers. Their main focus was simply to say the things nobody had ever said to them. The overall visual style was very human, warm, and highly approachable for young users. They completely removed the clinical gloss that usually pushes younger audiences away from therapy. The ultimate goal was to make struggling users feel instantly comforted and deeply understood. They wanted scrolling teens to feel like they had suddenly stumbled upon a caring friend. This gentle, friendly approach was exactly what Thai teenagers were desperately looking for online. The initial instinct of the young founders proved to be incredibly accurate and effective. What started with just a few likes quickly exploded in popularity across various social networks. Young people started sharing the comforting posts with their close friends every single day. Today, the numbers behind the Crying Cloud platform are absolutely staggering and highly impressive. The platform has built a massive community of over 125,000 followers on its Instagram page. Furthermore, it has organically reached more than 30 million people across five different Asian countries. A single private message eventually changed the entire direction and purpose of the platform. A young person reached out to the page desperately seeking actual psychological medical help. This critical moment made the founders realize a very painful truth about their online community. The massive gap in accessible mental health care was much larger than they previously thought. They quickly knew that posting relatable quotes was no longer enough to save these teenagers. The founders realized that nobody was coming to fix this massive problem for their generation. Therefore, they decided to take direct, immediate action to help save actual lives. They began building a massive volunteer network of mental health professionals that same week. Crying Cloud quickly transformed from a simple content page into an active medical support network. The dedicated team successfully recruited many compassionate psychologists and psychiatrists to their vital cause. These kind professionals happily agreed to volunteer their valuable time for struggling youth in need. This incredible effort created a literal lifeline for teens who could not afford expensive therapy. Today, this incredible network includes more than 100 volunteer mental health professionals and experienced psychiatrists. Together, they have proudly delivered more than 5,000 hours of professional medical care so far. The platform has successfully connected over 7,000 young people to affordable, high-quality professional therapy. Most importantly, the vast majority of these vital therapy sessions are provided completely free of charge. The young siblings did not stop at simply providing basic therapy access to teenagers.
