Pakokku red onion market sees prices rise over 6,000 kyats per viss, with low arrivals

In the Pakokku red onion market, onion prices continued to rise in the third week of September, reaching over 6,000 kyats per viss, it has been learned. Although onion prices have risen, arrivals have been below 10,000 viss, and farmers may have limited stock, according to those involved. On September 21, when 7,000 viss arrived in the Pakokku market, John Swe (small size) was priced at 5,000-5,300 kyats per viss, John Lat (medium size) at 5,400-5,800 kyats per viss, and John Gyi (large size) at 5,900-6,300 kyats per viss. "Stock in various regions is low. A few days ago, it was trading around 5,500 kyats, but prices have risen further in the last two days. Despite buyers wanting them, there are no onions in the market. At the current price range, even those who had stored them are releasing their stock. This year's onion prices are the highest in my lifetime," said a trader from Pakokku city. At the beginning of this season, red onions were traded at around 1,600 kyats per viss, and prices have continued to rise since then, reaching over 6,000 kyats per viss. In Pakokku and Yesagyo townships, it has been learned that the planting of new monsoon onions has begun as the water levels in the Ayeyarwady and Chindwin rivers have receded.
