Quezon City Recalls Iglesia ni Cristo Rally Permit Amid Public Disruption
Quezon City has recalled a rally permit for Iglesia ni Cristo, citing severe public disruption. The protest was held in support of Senator Rodante Marcoleta.
MANILA, Philippines (First published July 1, 8:15 p.m.) — Quezon City has recalled a permit that would have allowed Iglesia ni Cristo to continue its rally in support of Sen. Rodante Marcoleta until July 2. The permit was recalled as of 7 p.m. on Wednesday, July 1. A Department of Public Order and Safety post earlier announcing the July 2 extension, however, has since been taken down. As of 7:20 p.m., the Quezon City Police District estimated that around 10,000 people were still attending the rally along White Plains in Quezon City. Marcoleta, an INC member, arrived at the rally on Wednesday evening. The protest is being held in support of the senator, who is expected to face plunder charges over alleged campaign donations during the 2025 elections. He has denied the allegations. INC members began their protest on June 30 without a permit, a day after Ombudsman Jesus Crispin Remulla announced the possible filing of charges against Marcoleta. The June 30 protest drew an estimated 15,000 people, according to the QCPD. The group later secured a permit for July 1, allowing the protest from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. along White Plains Avenue and Temple Drive. In a letter sent to the group, the city's public order office said it withdrew the rally permit due to the “severe difficulties being experienced by the general public due to the conduct of the rally along EDSA and White Plains Avenue.” In a separate statement, citing reports, the DPOS said the protest caused severe disruption to daily life. “Libu-libo ang nahuli sa eskwela o trabaho, o sadyang hindi na nakapasok at naperwisyo ang negosyo. Nilabag din nila ang kasunduan na manatili lamang sa White Plains at hindi okupahin ang EDSA,” the DPOS said. (Thousands were late for school or work, or simply could not make it at all, and businesses were disrupted. They also violated the agreement to remain only in White Plains and not occupy EDSA.)
