Indonesia Pushes for Faster Global Rules on Traditional Knowledge Protection

Indonesia is strongly urging the international community to accelerate the development of international frameworks concerning the protection of traditional knowledge, biological resources, and genetic resources. This stems from concerns over the current situation where these valuable resources are often utilized by other countries and corporations without fair compensation or proper procedures. The Indonesian government recognizes the cultural and economic value of traditional knowledge, considering its protection essential for national sovereignty and the preservation of cultural heritage. Particularly, the use of traditional wisdom in pharmaceutical development and agriculture often serves as a starting point for research and development, but cases where the benefits are not returned to the original knowledge holders have become a problem. The delay in international rule-making could lead not only to economic losses but also to cultural erosion for countries rich in biodiversity like Indonesia. Therefore, Indonesia aims to push for the strengthened implementation of the Nagoya Protocol (the Nagoya Protocol on Access to Genetic Resources and the Fair and Equitable Sharing of Benefits Arising from their Utilization to the Convention on Biological Diversity) and the advancement of discussions within the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). This initiative is partly driven by voices from indigenous communities and traditional knowledge holders within Indonesia. They harbor anxieties about their rights not being protected when their knowledge is commercially exploited. The government aims for a future where knowledge and resources are utilized sustainably, defending the rights of these communities.
