Thai King and Queen Conclude Historic State Visit to Vietnam

The state visit to Vietnam by King Maha Vajiralongkorn Phra Vajiraklaochaoyuhua and Queen Suthida Bajrasudhabimalalakshana from September 14–16 was of historic significance to bilateral ties. This was the first state visit by a Thai monarch to Vietnam since the two countries established diplomatic relations in 1976. The visit took place as the two countries marked the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties and after they upgraded their relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in May 2025. Vietnamese leaders met with the Thai King and Queen, reportedly discussing enhanced cooperation, particularly in economic, cultural, and people-to-people exchanges. Vietnam seeks to leverage its strengthened ties with Thailand to bolster its regional influence and further drive economic growth. Concurrently, Vietnam expressed its intention to seek stronger defense ties with partners at the 13th Beijing Xiangshan Forum. This indicates Vietnam's pursuit of a multi-faceted diplomatic and security policy, given the complex security landscape in Southeast Asia. For Vietnam, whose relationship with China is intricate, stabilizing ties with neighboring countries, including Thailand, is crucial for maintaining geopolitical balance. Economically, Vietnam's agro-forestry-aquatic exports rose 7% in the first eight months, highlighting the increasing competitiveness of Vietnamese products in the international market. The deepening relationship with Thailand could also contribute to these export expansions.
