Cambodia Reaffirms Commitment to ASEAN Cooperation and Regional Peace at Anniversary Ceremony

On the morning of August 7, 2026, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Prak Sokhonn presided over the ASEAN flag hoisting ceremony to celebrate the 59th anniversary of ASEAN's establishment. The ceremony was attended by Minister of Commerce Cham Nimul, ambassadors and representatives of ASEAN member states and other countries accredited to Cambodia, as well as senior leaders and officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation. The ceremony marked a significant milestone in ASEAN's nearly six-decade history, reflecting ASEAN's collective commitment to promoting peace, stability, and prosperity in the region through friendship, solidarity, and cooperation. Concurrently, the event reaffirmed Cambodia's unwavering commitment to continue working closely with ASEAN member states and external partners to further strengthen efforts in building the ASEAN Community and fostering a resilient, inclusive, forward-looking, and people-centered ASEAN. Regarding the Cambodia-Thailand border issue, the Deputy Prime Minister emphasized that only a just, peaceful, and long-term stable solution can allow the peoples of both countries to live together in peace, stability, and shared prosperity. Therefore, Cambodia reiterated its urgent call for the immediate, full, and effective implementation of the Joint Declaration dated December 27, 2025, particularly the urgent resumption of the demarcation and boundary monument erection work by the Joint Border Committee (JBC), as well as allowing displaced citizens to return to their homes and resume their normal livelihoods without hindrance, safely and with dignity, as soon as possible.
