Pakkoku red onion market sees prices rise further, reaching over 5,000 kyats per viss

In the Pakkoku red onion market, prices have risen further, reaching over 5,000 kyats per viss by the end of the third week of July, due to a large number of buyers and low arrivals. In the first week of July, the price was 4,000 kyats per viss, and in the middle of the month, it was 4,500 kyats. By July 20, red onions reached 5,200 kyats per viss. A Pakkoku onion trader said, "As long as there are buyers, arrivals are low. On some days, only less than 10,000 viss arrive. Speculators are also selling because the prices have risen. Over 5,000 kyats per viss has never been reached in previous years. This year, all onion-growing areas have reduced yields, so arrivals are low, and buyers are paying higher prices, causing prices to rise." On July 20, when over 20,000 viss of onions arrived in the Pakkoku market, the prices were 3,300-3,800 kyats per viss for small onions, 3,900-4,600 kyats per viss for medium onions, and 4,700-5,200 kyats per viss for large onions. In the past year, 2025, red onions were traded at only 1,500 kyats per viss, and at the beginning of this season, they were traded at around 1,600 kyats per viss.
