The Myitsone Hydropower Project, planned to be built at the confluence of the Maykha and Malikha rivers, the source of the Irrawaddy River, about 23 miles from Myitkyina city, has been suspended since 2011. There are emerging analyses that this project, which has been suspended for over a decade, may be restarted soon. These analyses are not without reason. They are based on reports from international news agencies, a press conference held in Naypyidaw, and the recent visit of President Min Aung Hlaing to China in 2026. U Hket Htein Nan, who was once a member of the National Parliament representing the Kachin State Unity and Democracy Party (UDSP) in the 2010 general election, was one of those who opposed the Myitsone project. After becoming the Chief Minister of Kachin State under the military junta, he was allowed to accompany the Chinese President on his visit. Upon returning after shaking hands with the Chinese President, he irresponsibly told local residents in a childish manner that "there are power outages and phones cannot be charged because the Myitsone project is not being done."
