Phnom Penh Completes 48 Flood Mitigation Projects, Citizens Express Satisfaction

As of June 2026, Phnom Penh has completed 100% of 48 flood mitigation projects as planned, significantly reducing rainwater inundation in the capital and receiving praise from residents. This was stated by Phnom Penh Governor Khuong Sreng at a press conference on September 9, 2026, showcasing the progress of the Phnom Penh Municipal Administration for the first half of 2026. Governor Khuong Sreng highlighted that Phnom Penh is located in a low-lying area adjacent to the confluence of rivers, receiving rainwater from various mountains in Kampong Speu province that flows through the capital before entering the river. These factors contribute to the city's vulnerability to flooding during the rainy season. To address the issue of flooding and its impact on infrastructure, Governor Khuong Sreng emphasized that the government, under the leadership of Prime Minister Hun Sen, has provided special funding. This special credit has been allocated to the Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology, the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, and the Phnom Penh Municipality to carry out these mitigation efforts. Governor Khuong Sreng reported that 48 projects related to flood relief have been fully implemented in Phnom Penh. As of June 2026, these 48 projects have been completed 100% according to the plan. Notably, after recent light and heavy rainfall during the current rainy season, Phnom Penh has observed significantly faster water drainage, often within 15 to 30 minutes, with some areas experiencing no flooding at all. This improvement has been acknowledged and celebrated by the public. The canals and drainage systems within Phnom Penh serve as a crucial mechanism for rapid water flow to pumping stations. These stations are equipped to discharge water into rivers and streams, thereby reducing street flooding within the capital and bringing relief to residents.
