Maba Mosque buildings sealed, Section 144 imposed in Mandalay

AYEYARWADDY TIMES September 15 In Mandalay City, Aungmyethazan Township, Uputu Ward, the Maba Mosque's under-construction buildings and temporary prayer halls, erected without permission, have been sealed, and Section 144 has been imposed, prohibiting anyone from entering the surrounding area. The official sealing of the under-construction building on plot number 89, block number 23, covering an area of 0.052 acres, and the temporary prayer hall erected without permission on plot number 51/5, was announced on September 13. The imposed Section 144 prohibits gatherings, and violations can result in imprisonment for two years, a fine, or both. Regarding the sealing of the four-story reinforced concrete building on plot number 51/5, it has been prohibited to gather, speak, demonstrate by vehicle or on foot, incite, protest, destroy, or cause disturbances within the four sides of the Maba Mosque. Furthermore, it is prohibited to carry out any repairs, construction, prayer, or entry/exit in the vicinity of the four-story reinforced concrete building without any order. This sealing occurred after monks from the Patriotic Myanmar Monks Union posted a video on the TikTok social media platform questioning administrative officials about the construction of buildings within the Maba Mosque within the last two days. One monk stated in a TikTok video, "We are not demolishing it because it is a mosque. We are not demolishing it because it is a religious building. We are demolishing structures built without construction permits and those inhabited without residency permits, which are illegal, in Yangon and Mandalay. As you know, these are government departments. We came to see this (Maba Mosque) after hearing the news." It is prohibited to undertake any action without any order in the areas east of the Maba Mosque towards the Pyin Oo Lwin road, south towards Chanayethazan Township, west towards the Irrawaddy River, Sagaing City, and Pyin Oo Lwin Township, and north near Pyin Oo Lwin Township.
