Ambuklao, Binga Dam Gates Opened Amid Heavy Rainfall in Northern Philippines

Four gates each of Ambuklao and Binga dams in Benguet, northern Philippines, were opened on Saturday morning to release water amid continued rains in the Cordillera region. According to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa), this measure was taken to manage the rising water levels due to increased rainfall. As of 8 a.m. Saturday, the water level of Ambuklao Dam stood at 751.27 meters, nearing its maximum capacity. Binga Dam is also experiencing a rise in its water level. These dams play a crucial role in power generation and flood control for the region. However, the opening of their gates can increase the risk of flooding for communities downstream. Pagasa stated that it will continue to monitor rainfall and take additional measures if necessary. Local authorities have urged residents to stay informed about the latest weather updates and take necessary safety precautions. In the Philippines, dam releases tend to increase during the rainy season, posing a potential flood risk, especially for residents in low-lying areas. There have been instances in the past where evacuation advisories were issued under similar circumstances.
