Cambodian National Assembly President Offers Condolences on Lao Counterpart's Passing

Cambodian National Assembly President Khuon Sudary has expressed deep condolences to the Lao people, government, and family of the late Saysomphone Phomvihane, President of the National Assembly of the Lao People's Democratic Republic. President Phomvihane passed away on August 8, 2026, at the age of 70. According to a press release from the Central Committee of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party, the cause of death was vasculitis. In her message of condolence dated August 9, 2026, President Sudary stated that the news of President Phomvihane's passing is a sorrowful one not only for the Lao people but also for Laos's international friends. "His Excellency the Doctor will be remembered with deep respect as a model leader and a symbol of the traditional friendship, solidarity, and comprehensive strategic partnership between our two countries," President Sudary affirmed in the letter. "His Excellency the Doctor's invaluable contributions to inter-parliamentary cooperation between Cambodia and Laos will forever remain in our hearts and memories." Born on December 12, 1954, Saysomphone Phomvihane served as the President of the National Assembly of the Lao People's Democratic Republic since March 2021. The Lao People's Revolutionary Party considers his passing a significant loss of an outstanding figure who dedicated his body and soul to the will of the Party and the nation.
