Indonesian Film Industry Eyes Oscars with Strengthened Ministry Support for Balinale

The Indonesian Ministry of Culture is reinforcing its commitment to fully support the Bali International Film Festival (Balinale), positioning it as a strategic platform to elevate national cinema on the international stage and pave a path towards the Oscars. This initiative aims to enhance the global visibility of Indonesian films. A meeting between Ahmad Mahendra, Director General of Development, Utilization, and Culture Development (PPPK), and Irini Dewi Wanti, Director of Film, Music, and Art, with the Balinale committee, solidified the ministry's increased support. The discussions, attended by veteran actor and Balinale Senior Festival Advisor Donny Damara, and Festival Founder Deborah Gabinetti, reviewed the achievements of the 2026 edition and expanded the vision for Balinale as a sustainable creative ecosystem. A significant highlight of the reinforced support is the introduction of the "Tapestry of Indonesia" category. This new award is dedicated to documentary and narrative short films that adeptly capture the depth of Indonesian traditions, communities, and cultural diversity. The inaugural "Tapestry of Indonesia" award was presented to "Amazing Fantastic Extraordinary People," directed by Nadina Habsjah and Yusgunawan Marto. "The 'Tapestry of Indonesia' award represents Balinale's appreciation for young filmmakers who weave stories, diversity, and Indonesian identity to introduce to the world. These unique works must be able to touch the hearts of the audience, so that Indonesia is not only seen, but also really felt," stated Ahmad Mahendra, as quoted by VOI. Since 2024, Balinale has held the status of an Academy Award® qualified festival for the Best Short Film category. This distinction makes it the sole festival in Indonesia offering an "access path" for short filmmakers to compete on the Oscar stage. Mahendra emphasized this status as a golden opportunity that must be seized. The 20th edition of Balinale is scheduled to take place in Sanur, Bali, from June 1-7, 2027. The 2026 edition saw remarkable success, attracting over 1,300 submissions from around the globe. Ninety-four films from 38 countries were selected, including 23 Indonesian productions, alongside 20 world premieres, further solidifying Bali's role as a global hub for filmmakers. "Balinale was founded to create meaningful opportunities for Indonesian filmmakers by bringing the international community here, while bringing our stories to the world," said Deborah Gabinetti. Film submissions for the 20th edition of Balinale will officially open on October 1, 2026.
