Mizoram CM urges Chin revolutionary forces to unite

CHIN STATE – The Chief Minister of Mizoram has warned that border areas could fall back under the control of the military junta if Chin revolutionary forces do not unite. Mizoram Chief Minister Lal Thawma has warned that if Chin revolutionary forces do not unite, the border areas between Myanmar and India could fall back under the control of the military junta, and urged the Chin revolutionary forces to unite. The Chief Minister said this on July 25 at the ‘Joint Hnampual Meet 2026’ ceremony held in Mizoram State, which was attended by students from seven ethnic groups. He also expressed concern over the situation where the Myanmar military is expanding its territory within Chin State and could regain control of the border areas. “Due to the inability to form a united front and attack the enemy as one, there is a situation where we are concerned that the border areas along Mizoram will fall back under military administration. If we gather all our strength and attack, that cannot happen. It is very disheartening to hear that some are allying with outsiders to attack their own people,” said Chief Minister Lal Thawma. The Chief Minister further stated that although a constitution was drafted to enable the civilian and armed forces within Chin State to live unitedly under one administration, disagreements between ethnic groups arose just before the signing, and therefore, it has not yet been signed to this day. Furthermore, he said that the Chin revolutionary groups speak their respective ethnic languages and use the Burmese language as a common language, and that language is more important than blood ties for them to interact with each other and reunite. According to the current military situation, the towns of Falum and Thantlang, which were occupied by Chin revolutionary forces, have been recaptured by the military junta, and most areas within the town of Thantlang have also been attacked and recaptured. In addition, it has been learned from military sources that the military junta is deploying thousands of ground troops to attack the towns of Minthait and Kanpetlet, and is also continuing to carry out intense aerial bombing attacks. One military observer in Chin State commented that while it is partly true that some areas have been lost due to the disunity of Chin forces, unity cannot be built on goodwill alone. “It is true that there have been losses because they are not fighting under a single command in military operations, but unity cannot be built on goodwill alone without resolving the points of disagreement,” he said. However, the military observer also said that the Mizoram state government and the Chief Minister deserve recognition and gratitude for their efforts to unite the Chin revolutionary forces and for hosting and caring for the war refugees. The Mizo and Chin people have many similarities in culture, traditions, and religious beliefs, and they consider each other as brothers. Currently, out of the nine townships in Chin State, Haka, Falum, Tiddim, and Thantlang are controlled by the military junta. Minthait, Kanpetlet, and Matupi are controlled by Chin revolutionary forces, and Paletwa town is controlled by the Arakan Army (AA). Both forces are still stationed in Thantlang town.
