Thailand Cracks Down on Massive Bitcoin Power Theft Ring

Thailand’s government has launched a major strike against illegal cryptocurrency operations, targeting a criminal network that was stealing public electricity for Bitcoin mining. Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul recently detailed the massive sweep, known as Operation Silent Volt, which was spearheaded by the Department of Special Investigation (DSI). The operation involved raids on seven locations across five provinces: Bangkok, Nonthaburi, Pathum Thani, Samut Prakan, and Chonburi. Authorities seized numerous pieces of equipment used in the criminal enterprise, including Bitcoin mining rigs, computers, transformers, and electricity meters. Several individuals suspected of involvement in the scheme were arrested. This crackdown highlights the surge in cryptocurrency mining in Thailand and the associated increase in energy consumption, as well as the risks of illegal activities. Issues such as overloading the power infrastructure and non-payment of electricity bills due to illicit practices have been raised.
