Cambodia Seizes 30 Tons of Illegally Imported Glutinous Rice from Laos

Cambodian authorities on the afternoon of July 28, 2026, seized a truck carrying approximately 30 tons of glutinous rice that was illegally imported from Laos in Preah Vihear province. The operation was conducted under the direction of Mr. Thuch Banch Santipeap, Prosecutor General of the Preah Vihear Provincial Court, with procedural coordination by Mr. Sreng Vutha, Deputy Prosecutor General. According to officials, the seized truck, bearing the license plate Kampong Cham 3B-8955, was found to be illegally importing glutinous rice from Laos. The truck was intercepted along National Road 64 in Preah Vihear city. Following the seizure, Mr. Ang Sokhanau, Director of the Kampong Thom-Preah Vihear Customs and Excise Branch, arranged for the truck and its cargo to be transported to the branch's headquarters for further legal proceedings. This incident underscores the ongoing challenges in combating smuggling and illegal trade along the Cambodia-Laos border. The illicit flow of goods, particularly essential items like rice, can be driven by economic disparities and sophisticated smuggling networks.
