President of National Assembly Passes Away, Laos Declares National Mourning

Comrade Xaysomphone Phomvihane, a core leader of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party and President of the National Assembly, has passed away. The Party Central Committee announced his death as an "immense loss" for the Party, the State, and the multi-ethnic Lao people, declaring a five-day national mourning period from August 9 to August 13. The official funeral service is scheduled for August 13 at the That Luang Esplanade. Phomvihane was described as one of the core leaders of the Party Central Committee, possessing extensive leadership experience across local administrations and various sectors. He was lauded as an outstanding leader who dedicated his entire life, wisdom, and strength to the Party's revolutionary cause, nation development, and the well-being and prosperity of the multi-ethnic Lao people. The Party urged the nation to transform their grief and affection for Comrade Xaysomphone Phomvihane into strength, stand united as one around the Party Central Committee, promote the glorious and heroic traditions of the nation and the Party, resolutely deepen the implementation of the Party's renovation policy, and continue to perfect the People's Democratic Regime toward the socialist goal. This leadership transition occurs amidst strengthening ties with Vietnam. Reports indicate that on August 6, President Thongloun Sisoulith received high-level delegations from Vietnam, including representatives from the Ho Chi Minh National Academy of Politics and the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences, as well as Lieutenant General Nguyen Trong Nghia, Head of the General Political Department of the Vietnam People's Army, during their official working visit to Laos from August 5-7. Meetings focused on enhancing bilateral cooperation and exchanging theoretical and practical experiences. Notably, the Central Party Theoretical Council of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party and the Central Theoretical Council of the Communist Party of Vietnam met on August 4 to review bilateral cooperation and exchange theoretical and practical experience aimed at strengthening ties between the two Parties. These developments underscore the continued influence of the traditional "special relationship" between Laos and Vietnam on Laos' political and economic landscape, particularly within its one-party system. The Lao People's Revolutionary Party maintains close ideological and political ties with the Communist Party of Vietnam, a relationship that significantly shapes regional dynamics and internal policy directions.
