Cambodia's Diplomatic Efforts on Thai Border Dispute Garner International Attention

PHNOM PENH, Aug 3, 2026 (KPT) — Cambodia’s government stated that its diplomatic efforts to resolve the border dispute with Thailand are attracting increased attention from the international community. Government spokesperson Pen Bona said that Prime Minister Hun Manet has prioritized the protection of sovereignty, territorial integrity, and citizens through diplomatic engagement. “Prime Minister Hun Manet has been actively engaged in diplomatic efforts to protect Cambodia’s sovereignty, territorial integrity and its people, treating these as the highest priorities,” he said. Since the second ceasefire took effect on December 27, 2025, Cambodia’s Secretariat of Border Affairs has sent 10 diplomatic notes to Thailand requesting a special meeting of the Joint Boundary Commission and the deployment of joint survey teams. Pen Bona said Cambodia’s proposals and commitment to peaceful resolution under international law had helped the global community gain a clearer understanding of the situation. He repeated accusations that Thailand had illegally occupied Cambodian territory and prevented around 20,000 displaced citizens from returning home. Thailand has previously rejected such claims. Pen Bona said UN Special Rapporteur Thomas Andrews visited affected communities, observing damaged homes, unexploded ordnance and barriers along the border. Andrews stressed that international law guarantees displaced people the right to return safely, a principle reflected in the December ceasefire. The spokesperson added that the Parliamentary Assembly of the Francophonie adopted a resolution last month reaffirming support for Cambodia’s sovereignty and expressing concern over civilian casualties, displacement and reported damage to cultural sites.
