Marcoleta seeks vote count in VP Duterte impeachment trial

Detained Senator Rodante Marcoleta has formally asked the Senate impeachment court to consider his vote in the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte. Senate President Francis Escudero, who also presides over the impeachment court, confirmed on Monday that the court received a letter from Marcoleta. The letter cited a rule from the 2000 impeachment trial of former President Joseph "Erap" Estrada, requesting that his vote be counted. Escudero deferred immediate action on the request and referred the letter to the Senate as a legislative body for deliberation. "Personally, once we are convened as a Senate legislative body, I am inclined to agree with the suggestion of Senator Marcoleta for as long as there is no suspension accorded to him," he stated. Marcoleta was arrested following the issuance of an arrest warrant by the Sandiganbayan in connection with a P75-million plunder case filed against him over undeclared campaign donations received for his 2025 senatorial bid. He is currently detained at the male dormitory of the Quezon City Jail in Payatas. This development raises questions about the rights and responsibilities of lawmakers, particularly concerning the legal standing and voting rights of detained senators in legislative proceedings. It comes amid ongoing political tensions and concerns over corruption allegations against public officials in the Philippines.
