Central, Central Highlands, Southern Vietnam Brace for Heavy Rains, Flood and Landslide Risks

The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting has announced that from approximately September 10-15, the Central region, stretching from Thanh Hoa to Binh Dinh, is expected to experience widespread heavy rainfall. This weather event carries the potential to increase risks of flooding, flash floods, and landslides. Areas with mountainous terrain or slopes are particularly vulnerable to soil saturation leading to landslip incidents. This forecast is viewed as part of the unusual weather patterns Vietnam has been experiencing in recent years. Amidst a 95% probability of El Niño and projections of insufficient rainfall in the northern and southern regions during September, the announcement of heavy rains underscores the critical importance of addressing climate change. Drawing from past disaster experiences, the Vietnamese government is prioritizing the enhancement of early warning systems and the development and dissemination of evacuation plans for residents. Even in urban areas where infrastructure is developing, the risk of urban flooding due to intense rainfall cannot be overlooked.
