Vietnam Intensifies Fight Against Illegal Fishing, Encouraging Citizen Participation to Eradicate IUU

On July 30, in Nam Cua Viet commune, Trieu Van Border Guard Station (Quang Tri Provincial Border Guard) coordinated with Nam Cua Viet commune and Hải đội 202 (Flotilla 202), Command of Coast Guard Region 2, to organize a conference on preventing and combating illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing. Quang Tri province is dealing with 2 fishing vessels violating IUU fishing regulations. Quang Tri strives to remove the 'yellow card' for IUU. Substantive actions to remove the 'yellow card' for IUU: Converting fishing vessels towards sustainable fishing. Quang Tri: Establishing 2 interdisciplinary inspection teams to monitor fishing grounds and combat IUU fishing. Quang Tri: Continuing investigation and criminal prosecution of fishing vessels violating IUU fishing regulations. This initiative is part of Quang Tri province's broader efforts to address the issue of IUU fishing, a critical concern for maintaining Vietnam's access to international markets, particularly the EU. The province has been actively implementing measures to comply with international standards and remove the EU's 'yellow card' warning, which was imposed due to concerns over IUU fishing activities. These measures include enhancing monitoring and control systems, educating fishermen on regulations, and promoting sustainable fishing practices. The recent conference aimed to further raise awareness among the local fishing community about the importance of adhering to legal and sustainable fishing methods, emphasizing the collective responsibility in combating IUU fishing to protect marine resources and the reputation of Vietnam's seafood industry.
