Phu Quoc Island Sees Tourism Surge, on Track to Meet Annual Target

Phu Quoc Island, Vietnam's largest island off the southern province of An Giang, has welcomed a total of 6.8 million tourists from January to July, indicating a strong start towards its annual target of 8.5 million visitors, including 2 million foreigners. In July alone, the island saw 1.03 million tourists, a 31% increase year-on-year. Foreign arrivals surged by 82% to 176,000, highlighting a significant recovery. The surge in international arrivals to Phu Quoc is attributed to new direct flight routes, favorable visa policies, and expanding tourism infrastructure. Sun PhuQuoc Airways, Vietnam's newest carrier, launched a daily direct flight between Singapore and Phu Quoc on July 25. The island's 30-day visa exemption policy has also simplified entry procedures for foreign visitors. Online travel platform Expedia named Phu Quoc among its "10 most appealing islands for 2026," recognizing its emergence as a luxury hub in Southeast Asia and a prime choice for high-end travelers. Preparations for the 2027 APEC summit are also accelerating infrastructure development, including upgrades to its international airport, transport networks, accommodation, convention venues, and urban spaces.
