Mindanao Port Expansion Project Bids Opened to Filipino Firms

The Department of Transportation (DoTr) has invited bids for the expansion of the Sultan Naga Dimaporo International Port in Lanao del Norte. The project is estimated to cost approximately P514.54 million. The scope of work includes the extension of the reinforced concrete pier, the installation of roll-on/roll-off (RORO) facilities, and the construction of passenger and administrative buildings. Bids are due by August 17. Notably, only Filipino-owned firms meeting the eligibility requirements are permitted to participate in this tender, reflecting a policy aimed at fostering domestic industry and economic self-reliance. The winning bidder will be required to complete the project within 510 calendar days from the contract signing. The government anticipates that the enhanced port facilities will strengthen the logistics network in Northern Mindanao and further support growing trade activities. Given the archipelagic nature of the Philippines, efficient domestic logistics are crucial for economic development. The Mindanao region, rich in natural resources and a key agricultural and fishing hub, also holds strategic importance for access to the South China Sea. This port expansion is expected to not only boost the regional economy but also potentially enhance Mindanao's competitiveness in international trade in the future. In terms of Japan-Philippines relations, it could indirectly contribute to smoother trade and investment from Japan.
