Martial Law Powers Invoked in Narathiwat After Ranger Killing

Military authorities have invoked martial law powers across Narathiwat province to step up operations against suspected insurgents following the fatal shooting of a ranger earlier this week. Maj. Gen. Yod Aowut Phuengphak, commander of the Narathiwat Task Force, signed an order on Friday authorizing military personnel to exercise powers under Thailand’s Martial Law Act of 1914 to conduct searches and maintain public order. The order follows the killing of a ranger from Ranger Regiment 45 in an ambush on July 22. Authorities said the suspects remain at large and may pose a threat to public safety. Under the order, security forces are empowered to set up checkpoints, search vehicles and homes, and immediately arrest and detain individuals suspected of involvement in the insurgency. The directive also authorizes officers to use weapons immediately against suspects who pose an imminent threat to security personnel, provided the use of force is necessary and proportionate.
