The Head of the Presidential Staff, Dudung Abdurachman, has strongly condemned the act of 'self-justice' in Tabanan, Bali, where a man suspected of chicken theft died after being attacked by a mob. He emphasized that violence outside legal proceedings is unacceptable and urged the police to prevent recurrence and thoroughly investigate the case.
The Head of the Presidential Staff, General TNI (Ret.) Dudung Abdurachman, has condemned the act of 'self-justice' in the case of a suspected chicken thief's death in Tabanan Regency, Bali. He urged that similar incidents should not happen again. Dudung stated that the death of a citizen suspected of stealing chickens due to mob violence is a humanitarian tragedy that requires collective attention. "As the Head of the Presidential Staff, I express my deep concern and condolences, as well as condemn the violent acts that have resulted in the loss of a life. The suspicion of a crime does not negate his right to a fair legal process," he was quoted as saying by Antara, Monday (7/27/2026). According to Dudung, no action can justify the taking of a life outside of legal proceedings. Every alleged criminal act must be processed according to the applicable legal mechanisms. He encouraged the police to strengthen education for the public regarding the dangers and legal consequences of vigilantism, in addition to continuously prioritizing preventive measures. Furthermore, Dudung invited religious leaders, traditional leaders, community leaders, and community heads to actively play a role in building a culture of peace and non-violent conflict resolution. He also asked law enforcement officers to thoroughly investigate the case professionally, transparently, and justly to provide legal certainty for all parties involved. "Our country is a country of law. All citizens are equal before the law. Therefore, let us return to that principle," he said. Previously, a man with the initials KD died after allegedly being beaten by a mob for suspected chicken theft in Tabanan Regency on Friday (7/24).
