Yogyakarta Student Protest Turns Chaotic Amidst Clashes with Citizens

A student demonstration in Yogyakarta turned chaotic on Tuesday, September 1st, 2026, at the Simpang Empat Jalan Jenderal Sudirman intersection. The protest, organized by a group calling themselves the "Civil Society Alliance," began at 4:00 PM WIB. The demonstrators, comprising students and members of civil society, marched from the UGM Roundabout to the intersection, voicing various demands through speeches and posters. While the demonstration started peacefully, tensions escalated as clashes occurred multiple times with other community elements who opposed the protest. Around 7:10 PM WIB, a confrontation arose when a group of citizens accused the protesters of causing traffic jams. The situation briefly calmed down but flared up again around 8:40 PM WIB. A group identifying themselves as local residents approached the demonstrators, demanding the protest be halted after several hours. The protesters urged calm, stating they were conducting a peaceful demonstration. Following negotiations, an agreement was reached for the "Civil Society Alliance" to retreat towards the UGM Roundabout, provided the opposing group also dispersed. However, during the negotiation process, some individuals from the southern group pursued the demonstrators as they attempted to move north. This led to pushing and shoving, and even physical altercations. The situation only subsided after police intervention and security measures were implemented. Following the unrest, the demonstrators ultimately chose to disperse and head north towards the UGM Roundabout. Jalan Jenderal Sudirman was reopened to traffic once the situation stabilized.
