Young 'Doctor to the Barrio' Arrives in Agusan del Sur, Attracting Online Following

SAN FRANCISCO, Agusan del Sur — When Dr. Lyka Dela Rosa arrived in Talacogon, Agusan del Sur, to begin her assignment as “Doctor to the Barrio,” she was welcomed not only by municipal officials and residents, but also by a growing online community that now closely follows nearly every development in the town. Dela Rosa formally began her service on Thursday through a courtesy call on Mayor Pauline Marie Masendo, RN. Joining her were Marites Litera, head of the municipal human resource management office, and representatives from the Department of Health. As Talacogon’s new Doctor to the Barrio, Dela Rosa will work with Municipal Health Officer Dr. Rommel D. Medrano to provide primary healthcare, support disease-prevention programs, promote healthy communities, and strengthen the municipality’s health system. The Doctor to the Barrio program deploys physicians to communities, where access to medical services is limited. The initiative was launched in the early 1990s during the term of the late Health Secretary Juan Flavier, who believed that a person’s address should not determine whether medical care was within reach. For Talacogon residents, Dela Rosa’s assignment means another medical professional will be available to help address the town’s healthcare needs. But beneath the official announcement was another story: Talacogon has gained followers far beyond its municipal boundaries. The post by the Municipal Information Office-LGU Talacogon welcoming Dela Rosa quickly attracted comments from people who openly admitted that they were not from Talacogon. Some playfully called themselves the town’s “online residents.” One follower said she was always present in Talacogon’s posts even though she had little information about what was happening in her own hometown. Another shared that she had started checking Talacogon’s page for school announcements rather than waiting for updates from her own local government. Others joined the conversation with humor. “Can online residents also get a checkup there?” one commenter asked. Their reactions reflect Talacogon’s growing visibility on social media. That attention became especially evident following the outpouring of sympathy for the family of the late Rene Clert “Bobet” Baterbonia, a rising basketball personality whose story touched people from many places. Baterbonia, an Ateneo Blue Eagles recruit, died from drowning along with another player, Divine Adili of Nigeria, during a team-building activity last month in Aurora province. As messages of grief and support spread online, more people discovered Talacogon, a first-class town with a population of almost 38,000. Some followers have expressed hope that the town’s growing popularity may attract investors, create jobs, and bring new opportunities to residents. For now, Dela Rosa’s arrival brings a more immediate benefit: stronger healthcare support for the people of Talacogon.
