Chiang Rai Customs Seize 16.5 Tons of Smuggled Pork from China

Chiang Saen customs officials in northern Thailand have seized a massive shipment of illegal meat. On September 17, they discovered 16.5 tons of pork smuggled into the country from China. This illegal cargo is currently valued at approximately 1.53 million baht in the local market. Officials successfully caught the smugglers trying to sneak the unapproved meat past standard border security checks. A cargo ship arriving from China originally declared its load as fresh farm produce. The shipping documents listed items like bok choy and lettuce stored inside a cold room. In total, the ship’s crew claimed they were bringing in 930 boxes of harmless green vegetables. However, local border authorities quickly suspected something was wrong with the ship’s actual cargo. Customs agents decided to look closer using large X-ray machines on the shipping containers. They teamed up with local health and agricultural agencies to fully inspect the suspicious ship. This joint task force included the Chiang Rai Animal Quarantine and local food safety teams. Together, they opened the cold storage room to uncover what was truly hidden inside. Instead of leafy greens, the X-ray scans revealed hundreds of packages of frozen pork. Officers counted exactly 379 boxes packed full of meat that nobody officially declared. According to Customs House Officials, the smugglers did not have any required health disease certificates. They also lacked the legal import permits needed to safely bring foreign meat into Thailand. Authorities immediately confiscated all 16.5 tons of the illegal pork to protect the public. Moving unverified meat across borders is incredibly dangerous because it can easily spread animal diseases. For example, stopping this shipment helps protect local Thai pig farmers from serious agricultural threats. By confiscating this undocumented meat, officials helped keep local farms and the food supply safe. The government quickly charged the smugglers under the strict Thai Customs Act of 2017. They also broke the Animal Epidemic Act of 2015 by moving untested meat products. These strict laws exist to keep unsafe and unregulated food out of local Thai grocery markets. Now, the involved suspects face heavy financial fines and potential jail time for their serious crimes.
